| Can Diet pop be bad for you? | | Can Diet Beverages Be Dangerous?
By Dr. H. Dan Bobb
According to numerous reports and research studies, the sweetener Aspartame (Nutrasweet) can cause serious health problems in people whom are sensitive to it. The FDA has known this since 1984, when a paper from the University of Arizona, was published in the Journal of Applied Nutrition. In this study it was found that the chemical composition of Aspartame allows the release of one molecule of methanol for every molecule of aspartame consumed. This can lead to acute methanol poisoning, similar to drinking rubbing alcohol. This is particularly dangerous if exercising and sweating, where dehydration is common, and drinking diet drinks with aspartame as the sweetner.
The FDA is aware of 92 symptoms which may be caused in certain sensitive individuals. The most common are headache (21%), Dizziness (11.2%), Change of mood (10%), Vomiting or nausea (9.8%), Abdominal cramps (6.9%), Change in vision (5.5%), others include seizures, memory loss, fatigue, neurological symptoms, rash, sleep problems, change in heart rate etc. The rest of the list is available at http://aspartametruth.com.
There have been other studies that have shown a problem with transporting diet soft drinks in hot weather. Apparently when aspartame is heated above 88 degrees it starts to alter the chemical composition of the substance to formaldehyde. This is used in embalming and can be toxic when accumulated in your system.
| | | | Can Diet pop be bad for you? (continued) | | Particularly of concern to diabetics who consume large quantities of diet soda is the intensification of hypoglycemic reactions for those on insulin. In a report from Dr. H. J. Roberts, a diabetic specialist in West Palm Beach Florida, he states that diabetics on insulin should avoid aspartame due to blood sugar levels deviating rapidly causing increases in insulin reactions. He also states that symptoms improve within 2 to 3 days of removing the diet sodas from the individuals diet.
Dieters beware! The consumption of diet pop has been found to stimulate your desire for carbohydrates. It also led to fat deposits in lab mice in the hip and buttock areas. The Aspartame inhibits the brain?s production of serotonin, which regulates carbohydrate consumption. In other words, diet pop makes you hungrier when you are dieting already.
The bottom line from the information I have read is this. If you develop unusual symptoms after a period of time of consuming aspartame, most symptoms will reverse themselves by removing it from your diet. Children and pregnant women should avoid it altogether, and dieters would be better served drinking something else.
